Historys Jesus Part IIIPaul of Tarsus or Apollonius of Tyana?ByA. C. McCann - hon. DDSince I attempted to point out in Historys Jesus (part 1) that Paul of Tarsus was not who he pretended to be, I would now like to point out that Paul admits to a lie in Romans 3:7 and even throws us a hint by coupling his name with Appollos (short for Apollonius) in I Corinthians. Of course, Pauls lie was that he was not ever who he pretended to be, as he also admits in I Corinthians 9:20-22, And unto the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might gain the Jews . . . To them that are without law, as without law . . . I am made all things to all . . . In other words he pretended to the Jews to be a Jew and to the gentiles to be a gentile. He was indeed a man of two faces. As will be seen in the parallel below, there are many details that correspond between the lives of Paul and Apollonius, such as the claim about Apollonius being able to speak and understand "all languages" without having studied or learned them and Paul being able to speak in tongues unknown to him. Apollonius and Paul's journeys took a very similar route around the Mediterranean and it has been calculated that Paul and Apollonius were at both Ephesus and Rome at precisely the same time. It would be rather strange if two such similar personages preaching to religious communities in these same places were unknown to each other, unless, just maybe, they were, in fact, each other.
