I hadn't been attending WCG for about 6 years when Herbert wrote the article jealously trashing the memory of John Lennon. Actually, I never would have known about it if Ambassador College hadn't placed a service call with my employer, who dispatched me to repair their equipment. That publication was the one that the department was working on getting out.

When I decided to read the article, I never expected the extreme language HWA used to sum up the life of John Lennon. I never even really liked the Beatles myself, but not because I considered them to be too radical. I thought they were too commercial, too "pop", more or less a non-touring studio group. During their hey day, I preferred the Stones, and then later, Led Zeppelin, the Who, Lynyrd Skynyrd, ZZ Top, and Humble Pie.

Somehow, I don't think HWA was entirely familiar with what he chose to attack. Maybe, in trying to understand what he wrote about the roosters, he had only heard "Good Morning". Possibly his only exposure was "Helter Skelter" allegedly the Manson family's chosen anthem. Who even knows? But when HWA stated that John Lennon had done as much for Satan as he could remember, he went way over the top. I'm thinking that he secretly realized that rock and roll was a very powerful antidote to the Armstrong brainwashing techniques. And that, in Herbie's world, was the ultimate offense.

Ol' Herbie sure loved to ramble on about nothing didn't he. Unlike HWA at least the Beatles left a great legacy. A hundred years from now the Beatles and the names John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr will be remembered, Heck, even Yoko Ono and former drummer Pete Best will be remembered, so what about Herbert W Armstrong? Most people don't even remember the old geezer now. How nice it was of Herbie to write an article blasting the Beatles within a few weeks of John Lennon's murder. How thoughtful and "christian like" it was of HWA to write a disgusting article about the night Lennon died mocking him and mocking Lennon's fans for mourning his senseless assassination? How loving of a "true christian apostle." Was nothing, even a murder, off limits to this guy. I bet John Lennon will get into the kingdom of God before HWA does. No matter how nutty Lennon was at times, and how he hurt those close to him at least he had shame and regret and attempted to make peace with those people before he died. How about HWA? He had no shame or regret and made no attempts to right his wrongs before he passed on. I say John Lennon left a way better legacy than Herbie ever did. RIP John.
